Do I need lithium, or will lead-acid do?

Short answer: lithium is the right choice if you spend real time off hook-up, run heavy loads, or are building gasless — but for occasional, hook-up-based use, good lead-acid can still make sense. The honest deciding factor is how you actually use the van, not which chemistry sounds better. Here is what genuinely separates them, so you can decide for yourself.

The one difference that matters most: usable capacity

A battery's headline capacity is not the power you can actually use. With traditional lead-acid (including AGM and gel), you can typically only draw it down to around half before you damage it and shorten its life dramatically. So a 100Ah lead-acid battery really gives you something like 50Ah of usable power. A quality lithium (LiFePO4) battery can safely be run down much further — often 80 to 100 percent of its rating — so a 100Ah lithium gives you most of that 100Ah. In practice, a lithium battery of the same headline figure does close to twice the work. This is the single biggest reason people switch.

Weight and space

Lithium delivers far more usable power for its weight and size. On a van, where payload and storage are always tight, that matters — both for what you can carry and for staying within your vehicle's weight limit. If you have ever run out of payload, the weight saving alone can be the deciding factor.

Charging speed

Lithium accepts charge much faster and keeps accepting it almost all the way to full. Lead-acid charges slowly and tapers off badly in the last stretch, which is why a lead-acid bank can take hours of driving to refill. If your charging time is limited — short drives, weak winter solar — lithium makes far better use of what little charge you can capture.

Lifespan

A good lithium battery handles many times more charge cycles than lead-acid, and is not harmed by being left partially charged or run down regularly. Lead-acid hates being deeply discharged and degrades quickly if you do it often. Over the life of a van, lithium's higher upfront cost is frequently offset by not replacing lead-acid batteries every few years.

So when is lead-acid still fine?

We would rather tell you the truth than sell you the dearest option. Lead-acid can still be sensible if you almost always stay on electric hook-up, your power needs are light (lights, charging, water pump, the odd bit of telly), you do longer drives that give plenty of charging time, and the upfront cost is the priority. For that kind of use, the extra usable capacity of lithium may simply never be needed.

When lithium is the clear answer

  • You spend real time off-grid, away from hook-up.
  • You run heavy or sustained loads — an inverter, fridge, induction hob, diesel or electric heating.
  • You are building or running a gasless van, where cooking, heating and hot water all draw from the battery — here lithium is effectively essential.
  • Your charging time is limited and you need to capture every amp you can.
  • Payload is tight and the weight saving matters.

The catch worth knowing

Lithium is not a like-for-like swap. Dropping a lithium battery into a system built for lead-acid often leaves it undercharged, overworks the alternator, or stresses the charging gear, because the two are charged differently.
