Fiadh designs and installs solar on campervans, motorhomes and adventure vehicles — sized to genuinely contribute to your power, not just to put panels on a roof. Solar is one of the best charge sources there is when it is specified and fitted properly.
How much solar do I need?
Enough to make a real contribution to your daily power budget — which means it depends on what you use and when you travel, not on filling the roof. We work out what solar can realistically deliver for your usage and size it accordingly, rather than fitting the most panels that fit and calling it done.
Will solar keep my van charged off-grid?
In good conditions, often yes — and it is the quietest, most maintenance-free charging you can have. But solar is seasonal and weather-dependent, so on a van you live in year-round it works as part of a charging strategy alongside engine charging and shore power, not as the only source. We are honest about what it will and will not cover.
What is involved in a proper solar install?
Quality panels, a correctly sized MPPT controller, sound wiring and watertight roof fixings — and integration with the rest of your charging so the sources work together rather than against each other. The fixing and sealing matter as much as the electronics; a leak does more damage than a poor charge.
Solar in winter and abroad
Solar yield drops sharply in a Scottish winter and climbs again chasing the sun south. If you winter in Spain or Portugal it will do far more than it would at home; if you are off-grid in the Highlands in December, it will not carry you alone. We design around where and when you actually travel.
New build or retrofit
We fit solar as part of a full Fiadh build and as a retrofit to vans we did not build. If your existing panels are not pulling their weight, that is often a controller or integration issue worth looking at.
