Lithium Battery Upgrades for Campervans & Motorhomes
Fiadh upgrades campervans and motorhomes from lead-acid to lithium (LiFePO4) — done properly, which means rather more than swapping one battery for another. Lithium transforms what a van can do off-grid, but only when the rest of the system is set up to suit it.
Why upgrade to lithium?
Lithium gives you far more usable capacity for the weight and space, charges much faster, lasts longer, and does not suffer the way lead-acid does when regularly run down. For anyone spending real time off hook-up — and essential on a gasless van — it is the difference between managing your power anxiously and simply using the van.
Can I just drop a lithium battery in place of my lead-acid one?
Honestly, no — not if you want it to work safely and last. A straight swap often leaves the battery undercharged, overworks the alternator, or risks the charging system, because lead-acid and lithium want to be charged differently. A 'drop-in' battery is only drop-in electrically; the system around it usually needs attention.
What needs to change when you fit lithium?
Typically the charging side: a DC-DC charger to charge correctly from the engine and protect the alternator, a charge profile suited to lithium across any mains charger and solar, and appropriate protection and fusing. We assess what your van already has and change what genuinely needs changing — no more, no less.
How much lithium do I need?
It depends on what you run and how long between charges, not on a headline number. More capacity is not automatically better if your charging cannot keep it topped up. We size it around your real usage — the same approach we take on a full build.
Is lithium safe?
A quality LiFePO4 battery with a proper BMS, installed correctly, is very safe — often safer than the tired lead-acid setups we replace, which carry their own real risks when neglected. Correct installation is the key phrase, which is rather the point of having it done properly.
